In this case, a big part of their appeal to their target demographic is intentionally alienating people who love America. They're building brand loyalty among those that don't really like America. That's why they doubled down on Kaepernick and promote their swoosh hijab.

You're right, in the old days, most companies would prefer to stay away from controversy like this, or would prefer to be viewed as pro-America. No longer. Progressives are now a very large customer base that it pays to cater to.

So companies being anti gun, anti America, anti-traditional American values have a large market to go after, and they earn that market by doing shit like this.
