For the same reason that (as I pointed out in another thread) Facebook, Twitter and other social media wields so much power. WE as the general public give it to them. Buy using, watching and participating.
It doesn't matter whether you watch Lemon, Tapper, Burnett or Cuomo. It's all a bunch of news anchors rehashing the same thing over and over. That said, we should keep things in context: His program ranks about in the middle of CNN's offerings, and he get slightly less than 1.5 or so million viewers on a good night. So his viewership isn't exactly that of the Super Bowl or the Wedding of Charles and Diana.
Many in society aren't ready to stop tweeting, posting on Facebook, turning on CNN, etc. If we were, Don Lemon would disappear faster than a bucket of KFC in Harlem.
