Use extra light electric guitar strings on acoustic.
Will sound like crap, but wont hurt as bad = more time practicing proper chord structure, thumb and finger placement transitions.
It also allows success/accomplishments.
Very true...I advice that to all kids learning on an acoustic.
Adults are more easily discouraged than kids when learning.
Last bit of free advise.
