His attacks weren't driven by his religion, but rather by his strongly conservative beliefs.

Almost everything he said or wrote I've heard spouted by a conservative here in the states. That doesn't mean most of them would ever go off and kill people because of it, but neither do most Muslims who might agree with the same beliefs as a Muslim terrorist.

So here's the question: if you agree with the beliefs of someone who kills others because of them, are you in the wrong simply for that reason?
