I don't think this is correct. All of the outlets in the kitchen within 6 feet of the sink are required to be GFCI, the others are not. I have one next to me right now over the kitchen table that is the other side of the room from the sink, and it is NOT GFCI. I had the kitchen re-done, with all electricals done by a licensed electrician, and fully inspected by the town, just a few years ago. If what you say is the code now, it must be a very recent change.
