I should have mentioned that I'm in NJ, where carry permits are pretty much unobtainable for common folk, so carrying for me isn't a factor.
If you decide to purchase off the internet, you still will be following all the rules so it will be a legal purchase. ( Check but I think NJ has a 10 round magazine limit ) The firearm will be sent to a FFL holder and then whatever the state laws are, they will be followed.

Since concealed carry isn't a concern right now, you can get a full size weapon if you choose.

If you want a revolver, I have a Ruger GP-100 in .357 magnum I really like. The advantage of a .357 revolver is that you can shoot .38 special ammo out of it for practice. It's less expensive than .357 and also recoils less. ( note-- very few weapons can shoot different cartridges, the .38 special / .357 magnum is one and another is the .44 S&W / .44 magnum is another )

As mentioned, if you can find a shop or a friend with multiple weapons you can try, then you will probably find something that you like.

Below is my Ruger GP-100 in .357 magnum caliber. It's double or single action and has a 6" barrel with adjustable sights.
