Wow, interesting. My GF had work horses but died from something else, not really sure but he was only 60, which was 3 years before I was born.

Here's my maternal GF (1886-1947). My mom (1915-2002) was raised on what today we would call a "subsistence farm." No running water, no tractors just horses, only wood heat, very little actual money, they grew or raised nearly all of their food.

My mom learned how to drive horses, out of necessity, as soon as she was big enough to handle them.

They lived in the SW corner of NYS, very rural, all farms, nearly everyone there lived like that. Our family roots go back there to 1802, when they moved there from New England.
