Something similar with our water heater going on January 1st. Local plumbing company wanted $300 just to come out and look so I stuck my hand under the faucet to gauge how rough showering would be if I shopped around…
$2,400 later, I’m guessing I owned a new, $500 water heater but I had hot water again.
