I love the sound of of my Jackson-V body guitars and BC Rich guitars with EMG passive pickups.
As for the distortion pedal, get him a good marshal tube amp and let him learn how to adjust the gain to get a great clean tone when strumming lightly and then getting the dirty sound with harder strumming. The dirty channel on those is usually so good he wouldn’t need the pedal (assuming it’s a metal zone, right?)
