I'd leave the guitar your son has alone. Find your budget and hit the music stores, eBay, local classifieds, pawnshops.
Several brands out there that offer models for any price range. Let your son know how much you're willing to spend, and let him try out several guitars and see which one he likes best.
The larger stores; Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc, will have more brands to view, and that saves a lot of traveling, but, I've experienced in shopping for a new guitar that the smaller private owned stores are more willing to work with you on the price.
