I remember reading about the first Cannonball race in Car & Driver. There were several teams that had some clever ideas about fueling. One was a Camaro where they set up a fuel cap on each side of the car so they could pull in between two pump islands and fill from both sides.

Another team used a van, which was not going to be one of the faster vehicles, but they put in eight 55 gallon drums that were plumbed together and to the fuel tank. They planned on doing the entire race without stopping for fuel. There calculations were a bit off and they had to top off in Arizona. They also got busted in some midwestern state. Something about not being properly licensed and permitted to carry that much fuel.

Brock Yates and Dan Gurney won that first race in I think around 36-38 hours in a Ferrari.
