My initial took two weeks but I have a documented, solid work history. Yours most likely looked a bit more sketchy on paper; "Well, I played in this bar for two nights, did a gig in that one for a two month run" etc. They don't like that kind of gap in employment. At all.
I've worked in several nuclear power plants, and the clearance keeps getting stricter. That said, it's nothing compared to getting a Special Weapons Clearance to work on live nuclear warheads. They're serious about that stuff - as they should be.
