Firemen around here will work to save what they call a "defendable" house before one that is not. You can drive through the areas where the recent fires were and see houses intact in the middle of burn areas if they had a cleared area around them. Tell your son to speak with his local fire dept. about what he should do. They will be glad to come out and look at it.
