some years ago i was attacked by a dog on my property. he was off leash, crossed the fence line.

took a chunk out of my pants.

called animal control, pointed them to the dog's owner's home.

they talked at some point, and a few weeks later, a fence went up to keep that dog on that property.

animal control noticed my pistol, and said that if i had to defend myself (shoot the dog), to call them and they'll come out to pick up the body. law says I may use reasonable force to defend myself against a vicious dog.

before the fence went up, i saw that dog again, shot in his direction, he took off, and a few days later, he saw me again, and turned around and went home. learned his lesson pretty fast.
