My Cruze shuts off the whole engine at stop lights, with automatic restart when you take your foot off the brake. It's a little annoying in stop and go traffic, but with a light foot and practice, you can generally keep the engine running during stop and go traffic.
I imagine what you save on gas you'll spend in the long run on rebuilding the starter motor.
Having said all that, it gets mid to high 30's in mixed traffic, and a real 40 mpg on the highway, so I'm happy.
