I might not think in terms of overall exposure as much as a lot of contrast between the light and dark areas.
I took a bunch of shots of the dog to get what I was after. I wanted her eyes exposed correctly and a dramatic transition from light to dark.
I think even if you dropped the exposure on your shot, it would just be a darker shot with basically the same contrast. I'm doing a horseshit job explaining what I think of when I think Film Noir ain't i?
