Actually they eventually came up with a pretty good scam to take advantage of the situation. Sunday alcohol sales were prohibited in the city of Baltimore. By the 1880s my family owned a very large brewery and beer garden. (80,000 barrels a year) They located the place right across the street form the Baltimore city border. So, the routine for many major churches in the area (mostly Catholics, who have no problem with drinking) was on Sunday, you go to the church, then cross the avenue and go drink some beer. Brilliant!
