He lived a life of fast cars, fast horses, and fast airplanes in an era when they often proved deadly. He married into money but also lived a life balanced between the responsibilities of royalty and the need for adventure. Not many men can live a full life like that and keep a family.
We hear a lot about people who marry rich and spend money like water, who never accomplish much more on their own merit other than bragging (John Kerry comes to mind), and Prince Phillip was not one of those braggarts."
