I had a very similar experience but it was framed differently. I was a HORRIBLE student, not really motivated to do much and in a bit of trouble from time to time. The military was pitched to me as ‘WTF else are you gonna do? You suck at school and don’t have a clue what your plans are.’ (This advice came from school councilors not my parents) ‘Smart’ kids in my school and neighborhood went to college.
