In the late 70’s when I was considering the military, Vietnam had essentially just ended. The hangover was a real thing for many people. I remember the war but nothing specific. It was on TV news most nights in my house which my parents watched religiously. My father was in the Army and he never encouraged - or discouraged me from enlisting. But I had friends who’s parents were *absolutely* against it.
Did we ever clear that post-Vietnam hurdle to enlisting?

I came of age in the 70's.
I always wanted to join the USMC. All through HS and College whenever I was asked what I wanted to do I told them. They'd mostly respond that "Why do you want to waste your life" or You're much smarter or better than that".
When I failed my Physical ( really bad eyesight) . I regrets not serving and I see the constant denigrating of those who wish to serve.
