Well it worked! I used 3 different jacks and a come along to force the control arm back close to it's original position, then got a chain vice grip around the cross shaft and the little bit of bracket that was still attached to the crossmember. I was able to back the car out of the garage, up the driveway, then do a careful 12 point turn in the alley and back it back down the driveway into the garage.
I have met Bubba, and he is me!

Now I can start disconnecting everything from the engine and readying it for removal.
