Whisky (without the 'e') is a broader category of which Scotch is a subset.
Whiskey (with the 'e') is mainly produced in Ireland. Same stuff, but they spell it differently because Marketing. So yeah, you shouldn't use the term "whiskey" to describe Scotch - it makes you look like an ignorant n00b.
