Don't agree with Lars on points/condensor replacements, they are not ideal but once setup you can forget about them. HEI is really the way to go as the increased spark and readily available upgrades make a huge difference.
A high output coil and distributor(i used a Mallory setup) added hp and and higher rpm range. I added a CD box so could tune it exactly where wanted it. Plug gap was also increased. No way to get that performance out of points.
Leave the key in run position and can burn points up, always keep a set of point n condensor with tools in car if have them along with screwdrivers to change or file them so can get home. Back when amlady carried a nail file and is perfect for filing points and a pack of matches (cardboard) is good enough to set points.

True, when I was restoring the '70 I used the MSD distributor with the tach drive and hid the box in the wheel well. Never have to worry about points or burned plugs again!
