I dated a girl in college whose stepfather was a train engineer in Montana. Never met him.
I did get to ride a switch engine decades ago when we contracted with Union Tank Car Company. We did the weed spraying for them, and one year, they said, "hey, we found a bunch of old pelleted herbicide in our warehouse, but we don't have anyone licensed by the state to actually apply it," so I rode with the engineer and their shop foreman as we spread the herbicide up and down some of their 8 miles of track at the facility until we'd used it up.
Most fun day I think I've had working.
