nope, never in the military. but i did spend a year at McMurdo, working for a NSF contractor, doing construction inspection.
this is one of a very few military medals that can also be awarded to civilians.
30 or more days below 60 degrees south earns you a medal. and i also was awarded a Wintered Over bar, since i spent the winter there too.
actually got 2 signed certificates with it. one from the Navy, one from the NSF.
