I've only been called 3 times in my life. Once was for federal grand jury, which would have been a multi-hour drive each way for me 1 day/wk for 6 weeks. I was still (sort of) recovering from lung surgery, & driving/riding in a car could be uncomfortable. Doc wrote me a letter & the judge accepted it.
The other 2 times were for the local county court. I got called in 3 times for questioning, & got excused each time for various reasons. My favorite was when I believe I psyched out the defendant. He was a snotty young kid charged with breaking into a house & stealing a bunch of stuff. He kept looking at everyone in the jury box & talking to his lawyer. I assume that he was offering her HIS advice on which jurors he liked/disliked. So I decided to stare at him. Never took my eyes off him. He kept looking back at me, and finally pointed me out to his lawyer. I think he was afraid that I knew him somehow. It worked; I was the first juror his lawyer excused.
