Prior to retirement, I used a similar strategy for entry level. Would go through a temp agency and bring the person on as a temp. No mention by me that it could lead to a permanent position. If they worked out ok for six months I would offer them a job. If it wasn’t working out, I just called the temp agency and they told the person not to bother coming back. I used the same agency for several years and it worked out pretty well.
