I made a replacement for mine with copper piping and a ball valve. I drive it
in the summer and park it for winter, so I only use the heater slightly and
the ball valve keeps it off in the summer.

It's an old car. I'm sure you're on the original heater core. I'd replace the
valve and wait until there's a problem. But, if you want to bite the bullet
and extend your education(and vocabulary), summer's the best time to
replace the core and fix any other time bombs.....
