Bitterly cold days call for warm comfort food
beats going outside in the frigid temps.
Stupid easy to make and makes the joint smell good
plus you have a hearty dinner at the end of it all. Serve with a nice salad.
1 - Deep dish glass pie plate
1 - Pillsbury crescent roll tube
1 - 15 oz can tomato sauce
2 lbs ground meat (I used 1 lb 90% lean ground beef and 1 lb ground bison)
8 slices American cheese
onion powder, to taste
black pepper, to taste
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Spray pie plate lightly with non-stick spray. Press seams together (or use the kind that is just a sheet with no perforations) of crescent roll dough to form a pie crust into pie plate. Set aside.
Brown ground meat (about 8-10 minutes per pound); can do on stove top in pan or even microwaved, doesn't matter. Drain fat and crumble into pieces.
In a bowl, mix tomato sauce with ground meat. Add onion powder (I don't measure this, but 1ish tbsp is about the amount) and black pepper (I don't measure this either, but 1 tsp is about the amount). Mix thoroughly.
Fill pie shell with meat filling; cover with slices of cheese (you'll need to piece together cheese slices to cover entirely).
Bake at 375 about 20-30 min or until crust is nice and brown (check the bottom for brown-ness; this is why a glass pie plate is preferable). Cool and cut into slices.
*This recipe is adaptable in that you can edit the spices/cheeses/meat to have whatever 'spin' you want...think taco seasoning and Monterey Jack/Cheddar for a Mexican version, etc.
