Correct. The juvenile are varying colors of brown and reddish brown and they turn almost black as adults so the distribution of markings is hard to see.
We had an abandoned rock quarry behind my house on the gunpowder river growing up. Herpetologist would come all the time and catch snakes and do research. They started letting me tag along. Mom wasn’t thrilled but Dad was ok with it. Why I became fascinated by them and respect them as an important part of our ecosystem.
