i was talking with my sister a few weeks ago, as she has spent the last year or so working from her home, and not her office in downtown Houston. her husband has worked from home for many years (he's a writer). so i asked her if she had thought of living somewhere else, less expensive. her property taxes are almost 20k/year. but no state income tax. told her our property taxes were about 3700.
what??!!
and state income taxes are 5% max. if you are making 250k, 5% of that is 12,500, add another 4000 for property taxes, and you are still ahead by leaving TX.
she's still thinking that over.
not what you make, it's what you keep.
