I don't max bet every hand. If I open with a pair or three of the same suit, raise. After the 4th card, raise if the flush is possible or get three of a kind on a low pair. Otherwise, hold. I never keep raising for a possible straight since it doesn't happen much. So sometimes I'll miss winning with max bet on a straight, three of a kind or two pair but the cash doesn't go away as fast.
And while others have good luck with video poker, I can't seem to win anything there.
