Gene, you were probably looking at the Hull-Rust Mine. The largest open pit mine in the world. At it's peak this mine alone was providing 25% of the county's iron ore. The thing is so big it's hard to believe.
Iron ore reserves were tapped out and Taconite, which at the time was considered waste or an unwanted byproduct of iron ore mining came into the picture. Some smart MoFo figured out you could crush the shit, run a YUGE magnet over the dust and extract all the iron ore.
Unfortunately they -Reserve Mining Co- dumped the taconite tailings into Lake Superior which kicked off a even YUGER lawsuit. I was a colossal mess. Literally and figuratively.
