My grandpa did join the Navy. In 1943. They put him on a troop transport hauling soldiers to the battlefields of North Africa, Europe, Italy, and the Pacific; hauling wounded to England, Australia, India, Egypt, Scotland, Ireland, home. Through the icy treachery that is the North Atlantic and amid the Nazi Wolf Packs that hunted for slow moving easy prey like the U.S.S. Mount Vernon. Below is picture of her navigating through a blustery trip in the North Atlantic:



She was no small ship. She manned a crew of almost 3200 and she could haul upwards of 8000 men fully loaded. See below a pic of the full ship in her glory. See how far back the main beam is on the ship and then look at the pic above. Nearly a 1/4 of the ship is plowing through the monster wave.
