I'll offer my theory based on 60 years on this planet and attending school with, working with, and being friends with many blacks.
This is a broad brush statement BUT, in MY experience, many had bad teeth and bad breath and there was a misnomer that the menthol was a more pleasant odor and more pleasant taste than they naturally had. Like a burning breath mint.
