Allen Edmonds and Johnston & Murphy are still my go to dress shoe brands. When I worked in NYC (for 20 years) going to Stapletons Shoes down on Trinity Place was the place to get your shoes.
Living and working in NYC wreaked havoc on shoes due to all of the walking you do and getting half soles/heels to prolong the life of your expensive shoes was just a thing we all did. $45 for soles and heels when the shoes were $200 was just the logical thing to do back then.
