The term “lake pipes” was immortalized by the Beach Boys’ “Little Deuce Coupe”.
There are two explanations that I know of as to how they got that name. One is they were manufactured by a company called Lake Manufacturing. The other is they were used for runs on the dry lakes of Southern California.
I guess the difference between side pipes and lake pipes is that lake pipes are plumbed into the car’s standard (mufflers) exhaust system but can be uncapped when you want open exhaust.
