When I was a paperboy there were kids like me who had a single route and who carried the papers in a bag or in a wagon (or, sometimes, a purloined grocery cart). But they never seemed to be able to hire enough dumb kids like me, so there were also a bunch of older guys who drove around in red Suburbans and covered the routes that didn't have anyone else to deliver them. Each one of these guys had to cover multiple routes, and you bet your sweet Aspercreme that they threw the papers out the window anytime they could. Of course, where I grew up there were a lot of 3-story brick apartment buildings, so more often than not they had to get out of the truck and walk over to the base of the stairs, and then they would throw the paper up to the third floor (or wherever it needed to go) to avoid going up and down 500 flights of stairs every day.
Ah, the good old days.
