Any chance those 2 banks were Bank of America? I deposited cash this past summer at a B of A and a couple days later saw online that the account had been credited $1300 too much. I looked at the deposit slip and indeed it was wrong. I called the CSR line and told them - they said it would all balance out in a couple of days and not to worry about it. My husband and I couldn't figure out how they could verify a cash deposit so we went in the next day to let them know what happened. The kid at the front said "oh, that was me", took the deposit slip, went to a terminal and made the adjustment, came back, handed us the deposit slip and said "here ya' go" and walked away. No thanks, no nothing.
