The difference in mileage is minimal (679.96 vs 683.60) to go through Maryland but it saves about 15 minutes (at least according to Mapquest) in that there are no two lane roads involved and there does not appear to be any construction along this route. We've both gone the I-66 to I-81 to I-77 and then down I-65 but the link between Lexington and Beckley is normally under construction.

Going the northern route is, admittedly, less scenic but lends itself to high speed cruising.
