Never did. I use Melling Assembly lube for the bearings, tips of push rods etc.
I use a light finger smear of oil on the rings, and if it will sit, I will mist a light coat of WD-40 on the exposed steel or iron.
That is what I was taught in the 80's, and I never deviated.
