Paint works fine if you prep it correctly. I self paintd my valve covers and throttle-body on my old Z06 and it stood up to trackday use for years. It still looks perfect and never chipped or flaked at all. I used that wrinkle/textured black spray stuff by Krylon. From what I remember I used the following procedure:

1. Wash parts with dawn or similar
2. Put on nitrile gloves (oils from your skin can cause paint adhesion issues)
3. Wipe w/ acetone or similar
4. Lightly scuff sand parts
5. Re-wipe w/ acetone
6. Primer with high temp primer, use etching primer for metallic parts
7. Paint
8. Bake in the oven where applicable
