I'm guessing this is one of the organized rings doing the thieving, so both of those would probably be dead ends, i.e. faces covered, car used either stolen or plates covered, etc. And they probably were smart enough to disable the Onstar antenna or power to the Onstar electronics.....but maybe not?

Or he forgot it's in the garage.
