The vast majority of women now put their make-up on standing up leaning over the sink to see the mirror.
A vanity is an anachronism throwing back to when upper crust "ladies" had maids. Oh, and dressing gowns. They wore the dressing gowns when changing between morning dress, afternoon receiving garb to receive callers, and then dressing for dinner. They sat there and let the maids dress them and put the appropriate jewelry on.
