not really a mpg improvement but a perceived one. Drive exactly 100 miles with new tires.
Then drive the exact same 100 miles with completely bald tires and your miles travelled on your odometer will show like 102 miles.
Now, if you used 5 gallons for the trip with new tires, the consumption calculates to 20 mpg.
Now, if you use the odometers 102 miles with worn tires (instead of the actual 100 miles), you get 20.4 mpg. You used 5 gallons on both trips but your perceived mpg went up because the car thinks that you travelled 102 instead of 100 miles due to the worn tires.
Odometers usually display the distance travelled based on tire rotations. A tire rotation with bald tires is slightly less distance than a new tire.
