I think you're right. I was going to say '82, but maybe not. Or maybe it was the winter of '82-'83, making us both right.
That was the first time I heard weathermen explaining "El Nino" as the reason for the unusually mild winter here in the northeast.
I remember being at my folks on Christmas Day then, and it was around 60 or more outside, no snow cover, and my dad sitting in his recliner looking out, and being amazed.
