Plane Captains are usually E1-E3 and work in what we call the Line Shack, which is literally a shack on the flight line (on land) or easily accessible to the flight deck (aboard a ship). They do daily/turnaround inspections, launch/recover aircraft (when on land), huck tie-down chains, wash aircraft, fuel (on land), do fuel/oil samples, move aircraft in/out of the hangar (on land) but don't don't do normal maintenance tasks. It's a tough, under-appreciated job.
