Almost sounds like what happened to me last month. My credit card was set to expire on 12/22 but the shiny was worn off of the 1 and could only be seen using the reflection of a light source. Called the card company to find out why my purchase was rejected and the first thing she asked was my expiration date. Figured that was no random question and spotted the problem instantly. Yeah, I felt like an idiot but got a new card out of the situation and don't have to worry about expiration for another 6 years.
