My kids both grew up to be very respectful, but I never insisted (nor did their mother) that they say "Yes sir/Yes ma'am" to us. Yes Dad/Mom was fine. This (among so many other things about me) irritated my military in-laws. My ex MIL asked me why I didn't insist on it and I said to her "Because I'm their father, not their commanding officer. There's a difference, and I find nothing disrespectful about calling me Dad." Outside the home, different story.
Of course, the subservient wonder that she was totally locked up and didn't know how answer.
Oh...and I'd have had the snot beat out of me hourly if I acted like that.
