Softail came home from winter storage yesterday. Geezer Glide today.

The dealer had this on the floor. I'd ride the wheels off this one.

Nice to be ready to ride again. :cert:

I'm doing a full tune up/freshen up on my old bike but may take a few weeks.
They don't make any of the coolant hoses anymore so I'll have to custom spec those.
Local Yammy dealer won't touch bikes older than 25 yrs.

Damn clean for 31 years old though.

That was the era of bike I used to work on when I worked at a bike shop in the early 80's for awhile. We sold Suzuki bikes but would work on all sorts of other bikes. I mainly would put new bikes together out of the crate, and do valve jobs at the 500 mile break-in point. Suzuki street bikes were all OHC and adjusting the valves was a breeze once you did it a few times. I remember people bringing in the old Suzuki water buffaloes similar to your bike but from the 70's, those things leaked like a sieve. Also remember people bringing in the old Harleys from the 70's, complete POS typically. Would make a puddle of oil in the shop and you'd have to use a breaker bar just to get the battery case nuts loose.

Well, I went back and sat down with a salesman to hammer out some numbers. I knew all the chrome and custom items were worth exactly zero dollah. As far as they're concerned it's a 2009 FXSTC. Nothing more, nothing less.

Bottom line - $14,000 and my bike. The Road King list is $21, 550. The second set of photos is lace wheel/whitewall version. This'd be the one.

Now, I'll have a week of tossing and turning while I decide.

Is that a Radian? Haven't seen one in years. Try Partzilla and Bike Bandit for hoses... Yamaha still stocks mucho stuff for older units; I can get stuff even for my 1972 175.

Probably get more than $7,500 for the Softy if you sold it yourself...

No doubt. The trade saves on a little sales tax but not enough to matter.

I've been kicking it around all afternoon and I'm most likely not going to do this. I like the Softail, I'm not sick of riding it or anything but the R King really caught my eye. Had the numbers been better -way better- I'd have to rethink.

On top of the purchase price it'd need pipes, a seat and some new bars. Not sky-high apes but something.

What I"m wondering is if this color combo would work on my bike? I've been thinking repaint for a couple years now. Not every color looks 'right' on every bike.

So, they will basically give you $7500 for your current bike. That seems way low to me.

I DIG the Road King though. :seasix:

I'm not sure about the paint job man. I think I would leave it alone. White is hard to pull off on Harley's IMO. It works on that Road King. I know a fella that just bought a new Dyna Street Bob that's White, baby apes etc. Pretty fuggin neat bike.

The numbers are approximately this;

RK list is $21,550 subtract $8950 for the trade in value of the Softail, for a balance of $12,600. It would cost me $14,920 out the door. This induces slip-ons, a Stage 3 tuner and highway pegs.

If I took the RK as is, it'd be 12.6.

I'm not a "Harley Guy" but I like the looks of the Road King :yesnod:

You should have tried to deal a month or two ago. It's spring and now cycles are moving and they aren't desperate anymore.

ApexOversteer 04-15-2016 8:18pm

Regarding the two-tone paint job...

Remember the 100th Anniversary Black/Silver paint?

Try and find your bike with it.

Sportys, Fatboy, Heritage, all the hard-baggers.... black and silver two-tone.

Even the Deuce could be had with the two-tone, and IIRC that's basically your bike with a new rear fender.

But not the FXST.

My original theory was that the FXST doesn't have the acreage on the tins to let high-contrast two-tone paint work... but the Deuce's tins aren't any bigger...

Your Softail is a sharp bike and I'm not one to tell another how to spend their money, but DAMN that Road King is the shit. The paint job and whitewalls and lace wheels just make that scooter.

A few examples I just dug up. Some color combinations are fugly as hell. Others are OK.

Now I'm not a motorcycle guy so maybe my opinion is not valid. But although there are a lot of very nice bikes in this thread, including yours, Thomas, the blue and white Road King? Flamin' Gay.:yesnod:

IMO, some scallops might be the ticket for that two-tone spray...
